They give lazy people a reason to contribute	Some people (like me) see their missing badges as missing stickers in an album
They award you for contributing frequently...	...and for lucking out into being able to contribute every single day of the year
They let you be in a leaderboard and be recognized as one of the best contributors in the wiki...	...or as someone who has a laptop and internet out of his house or didn't go on holiday for a whole year to contribute every single day
